Does your home or office look old, dated, and unattractive? What you need is a renovation to refresh the space and make it look inspiring again. If you are a new owner, or even if you have owned the home or business for several years, you may have many questions and doubts on your mind when it comes to renovation solutions. These may pertain to the benefits, costs, and process. To clear your confusion and arm you with the information you need to make the right decisions, Fort Sask Reno Inc. has answered some of the most frequently asked questions about renovations. These answers are based on our personal experience so that you have first-hand information to ensure your home or business always looks spectacular and inviting.
1. What aspects of renovation and construction do you provide?
At Fort Sask Reno Inc., we do complete exterior and interior renovations. Including siding, soffit, fascia, eavestroughs, windows, doors, insulation, capping, and stonework on exteriors. Our interior renovations include complete bathrooms, kitchens, basements, including tile work, carpentry, flooring, drywall, painting, plumbing, and electrical. We also offer design services and much more.
2. Why do you need to know my budget before providing a quote?
By giving us an idea of what you intend to spend on a project, we can propose a service and quality that matches your budget. Often customers will say they are not sure what their budget should be and have no clue how much this type of renovation costs. This is understandable. If you are unsure of how much a project costs, we can give a ballpark estimate based upon the projects that we have previously completed.
For us to provide a detailed quotation, we will need to know within what price range we need to stay to ensure we are not choosing options that price us out of your available budget. In today’s reality, prices are in rapid flux, so historical costs are not a good indicator of current costs. In general, don’t hope to pay what you paid a couple of years ago.
3. How long does a typical renovation take?
While every project is unique, there are some basic ranges for timelines. Exterior renovation jobs can take anywhere from a single day for eavestrough jobs, one to two weeks for basic siding renovation, to eight weeks-plus for a complete exterior renovation including stucco removal, insulation, siding, soffit, fascia, eavestroughs, roofing, stonework, windows, and doors. For interior renovations, the minimum jobs for some basic trim or door replacements could take as little as a couple of days, two to three weeks for whole bathroom renovations all the way up to three months-plus for a full demolish and a redo of your interiors. When we have an understanding of your project, we will be able to give you a reasonable estimate on timing.
4. Is it advisable to move out and live elsewhere during a renovation?
This depends on the scale of the renovations you are doing. It is advisable that you live elsewhere if there is more than a small interior renovation being completed. Living in a home undergoing massive interior renovations is not safe or easy. If your renovation is a minor one, like a spare room or a bathroom in a house with several toilets and showers, staying is totally fine, but you may still feel like an inconvenience or annoyance. If your situation involves pets or children, we recommend vacating the premises during the renovation procedure, as this activity can be very stressful for them.
Similarly, if you choose to stay in your home during the renovation, it will be noisy and dusty. We take as many precautions as we can to reduce the dust and mess and always clean up after ourselves, but it will be dusty at the end of the day. In the case of exterior renovation, no matter the scale, there is no problem with you staying in the home during the process. However, we will need most of the parking spaces available. We will also ask you to remove items from the inside of your exterior walls, such as pictures, shelving with breakable artwork, etc., so that there is no breakage during the process.
5. Are some seasons or months better than others to have a renovation completed?
No, we complete projects with great success throughout the entire year. Often exterior renovation clients will indicate they’d like us to wait till spring to get started, but that is not necessary as we do this work year-round. Our busiest times are typically early summer and fall, leading up to Christmas. Regardless, it’s best to schedule your project at least three months before you would like the renovation to begin.
6. Uptill what radius are your services available?
We do work within approximately one hour’s driving distance from Fort Saskatchewan. We are open to larger projects outside of that range but would need to include some travel charges and, if necessary, accommodations on jobs.
7. How soon can you start?
Our clients often want us to start work as soon as possible, and we have lost out to competition that can start right away. The thing is, when we can begin the actual work is dependent on a number of factors. For example, at this time of year (January-February), we can take on eavestrough jobs as there is not much demand for this service and our trained professionals are available. However, come May and a few spring rainstorms, we will be booked out for at least a month.
Another tip to remember is if a contractor is ready to start tomorrow during the busy season, this may be a red flag indicating incompetence. On multiple occasions, we have been asked to come back and redo jobs that someone that could start right away but has messed up.
8. I want to renovate my home. Where do I start?
The first step is finding a trusted contractor. Someone with who you are not only willing to work but excited to engage in a long-time project of substantial personal importance with. Finding the right contractor is not a step to take lightly. Do your research and ask friends and family if they know anybody they feel comfortable referring. When you find a contractor you like, ask to see their portfolio, and consider contacting previous people who have worked with them. Request their credentials and ensure they are licensed and insured.
